    I'll typically advertise on forums where it's allowed. If it's what would be considered a competing forum, I'll ask first. If they say no, then I'll respect it but in return, I won't allow them to advertise on mine as well. That's simply fair.

    This is an interesting scenario. The answer is no but there is one exceptionally large football forum in Australia called BigFooty that has 110K members.
    Because a few of us post contributions about the Australian rules team I have supported since I was a child and some of these contributions are on a restricted access board it gets mentioned on Big Footy in both a negative and positive sense. This drives new members to the site. If you go by the logic that any news about your site is good news then it works as a way of growing the site.

    Do you advertise your forum on other forums as a way to grow your membership?

    Do you make sure you are allowed to do it or do you just do it and beg for forgiveness if needed?
