I ran a vB4 site on a dedicated server for years but "downgraded" to a VPS when I went to vB6. My dedicated was old and overpriced, my VPS is about 1/3 the cost for a server with plenty of power. The limited bandwidth that comes with a VPS was a concern, but I have a medium high-end plan that gives me plenty of bandwidth.

    - Please vote for: More search options in "Prune / Move Users" (vB6)
    - Completed: Make "Allow Edit Display Names" a Usergroup permission (vB6) Added as of 6.0.8

I think a VPS is what most of us need.

I have one as well, and I spend a little more for a bigger VPS to give me plenty to work with. I run multiple websites, so I need plenty of resources.

Ten years ago, dedicated was the way to go. It was the only way to handle a medium—or above-sized forum and the high price was OK because it came with 24/7 dedicated live "tech on the phone" tech support and a few other perks. Now, those perks are gone, and any new dedicated setup is very overpriced. The nice part about VPS is that if I ever need more horsepower, I can add cores, memory, or bandwidth to meet my needs. My old 2-core dedicated server wasn't flexible at all.

I agree with the VPS side of things. If I need a bigger server, I can add to it, and it prevents hiccups from happening if moving from server to server.
